FAREWELL TO MY DAD

A DAY OF REFLECTION SAYING FAREWELL TO OUR FATHER IVAN…

IT WAS A LOVELY SERVICE AT PORCHESTER CONDUCTED BY MALCOLM WHO WAS COMPASSIONATE

AND HEARFELT, I Read my speech,

IVAN TO MANY, DAD TO US CHILDREN...AND HIS FAVOURITE NAME POPPA TO ALL THE GRANDCHILDREN AND GREAT GRANDCHILDREN

HE WOULD BE VERY TOUCHED THAT DANIEL AND MARK RICHARDS BOYS, HAVE FLOWN OVER FROM DENMARK IN RESPECT OF RICHARD FOR IVAN. ALSO LYNDA’S  CHILDREN SPENCER AND CLAIRE BEING HERE.

IVAN WAS BORN JUNE 20TH 1928 IN GREAT YARMOUTH,

THERE WERE 5 CHILDREN TO DAVID AND DAISY WILLIAMS

DURING THE WAR YEARS THEY MOVED TO LONG EATON WHERE HIS FATHER WAS STATIONED A SERGEANT MAJOR IN THE ARMY, AFTER THE WAR THE FAMILY MOVED BACK  TO NORFOLK, WHERE IVAN STARTED HIS APPRENTICESHIP IN ENGINEERING  BEFORE JOINING THE  ROYAL NAVY

HE SPENT 8 YEARS IN  SERVICE ON  NUMEROUS SHIPS , WHICH HE LOVED, ESPECIALLY HIS TIME BASED IN MALTA, DURING THIS TIME HE MET OUR MOTHER DORIS  THEY MARRIED AND THE FAMILY BEGAN

LYNDA, RICHARD WERE BORN  WHILE  HE WAS IN SERVICE, 1954 HE LEFT THE ROYAL NAVY AND  STARTED HIS LAND CAREER AT THE PORTSMOUTH EVENING NEWS WHERE HE STAYED UNTIL 1970  JANET MYSELF AND PAUL WERE BORN DURING THIS TIME . 1970 OPENED A NEWSAGENTS IN SOUTH-SEA

BUT IN 1971 THE MARRIAGE HAD BROKEN DOWN  AND IVAN STARTED HIS REMAINING WORKING LIFE IN THE NAVAL DOCKYARD UNTIL HE RETIRED .

IVAN

A COLOURFUL CHARACTER, FULL OF FUN A WICKED SENSE OF HUMOUR SAW THE FUNNY SIDE IN EVERYTHING EVEN WHEN INAPPROPRIATE, EMBARRASSING  A CHARMER AND A HUGE FLIRT ..

LOVED A GOOD DEBATE AS LONG AS WAS RIGHT ,TOOK PRIDE IN HIS APPEARANCE ,ACTUALLY WAS VAIN,

WE TEASED HIM FOR HOW HIS HAIR WAS STILL NEARLY BLACK IN HIS 70’S, HIS PRIDE AND JOY AND DENIED IT BEING DYED . EVEN IN THE LAST DAYS HE WAS STILL TOUCHY ABOUT HIS HAIR . PAUL  used to joke Ivan dressed in his white jacket  was mr Delmonti .

IVAN WAS A GREAT NATURAL DANCER , HE WAS PROUD OF HIS SISTER ELAINE WHO WAS A PROFESSIONAL DANCER AND MOVED TO CANDA,WHICH OPENED THE DOOR FOR THREE OF US TO FOLLOW THE FOOT STEPS IN THE DANCING WORLD . HE SUPPORTED RICHARD AND PAUL IN THE PASSION FOR FOOTBALL,PLAYING SNOOKER  AND HIS BELOVED SPURS ..

HE COULD BE STRICT AND IVAN’S WORD WAS THE LAST WORD ,SO WE ALWAYS HAD RESPECT FOR HIM ,HE TAUGHT US TO HAVE   A SENSE OF PRIDE IN OURSELVES,

WE ALL HAVE OUR SPECIAL MEMORIES OF HIM ...  PAUL MY BROTHER AND  I OVER THE PAST MONTH  HAVE SPOKEN FONDLY  ABOUT  DAD ,  THE FUN ..LAUGHTER and His Craziness

ALWAYS COMES AT THE TOP OF THE LIST … A SPECIAL MAN.

On behalf of LYNDA RICHARD JANET PAUL AND MYSELF I would like to thank Terry and especially Paul Shorten for the care,Love and support they gave Ivan,

and hope DAD is reunited with all his loved ones  Joan,Lynda and Richard

I would like to read a poem

which I think is very much Ivan  by joyce grenfil

My Dad bless him ....

Our dear Dad, Ivan who

Passed away yesterday peacefully….

My brother Paul and I spent time with him yesterday by his bedside, a touching farewell..

He was quite a character, thinking of him with fun and laughter brings a smile of joy ..

this was taken in July when we took him out …bless him … he went into care shortly after and we were humbled by the staff who were marvellous with him at the Mary Rose for the past months ….he wanted to marry all the nurses…. That was Ivan … a charmer …. So embarrassing!!! But it was the man we loved and called Dad … Hope Richard, Lynda and your Joan were there to greet you.

Thank you to Joan’s boys Paul and Terry for all the care they gave you …

All our love Dear Dad from

myself Paul , Janet, Doris & Poppa to all your grandchildren & your great grandchildren here and in Denmark

Bless you xxxx

Dearest UNA

Our hearts are sad ... the passing of dear Una, I loved her so much...

she was such a special friend to Dougie for over 65 years and welcomed me into their friendship, We laughed, we gossiped, we travelled, we painted, we had lovely weekends and New Years together and fun evenings around a dinning table....

I admired her talent, as a actress her iconic roles she played through every decade in Television,Film and Theatre.

In life I loved her style so chiq, from her interior design

to her fashion, her amazing needle point to being an artist and having celebrated exhibitions .In admiration of her painting style witty, simple and so typically Una ....

We went to see her 2 weeks ago in Edinburgh a beautiful encounter, seeing Dougie and Una greet each other the tears rolled down my face , a beautiful friendship .

Looking as beautiful as ever dressed in a french little number her hair white and that Channel lipstick and matching nail polish chiq as ever ...with all her strength she walked to the door to wave us off.... How wonderful.....

Bless you dearest Una, Thank you for letting me be in your life,

You were a very private person, Kind, Loyal with a wicked sense of humour and a inspiration to me .

Our loving thoughts to your sons Jason,Christian and Joe that you were so proud of & all the grand chidren

And all UNA’s friends xx

my heart is full of love for you... until we meet againxxxx

OMG Its September !

Where is time going ? I need a safety belt ! Time is flying by, I cannot believe its so long since I last posted …

Well the summer is coming to a close , Although the past few days glorious sunshine ….

Have spent the summer at the thatch and enjoyed our time here … so much has gone on in the world and its great to be slowly getting back to some events in the near future …

Since May I have continued doing the live classes on zoom for the Generation Dance , Although had some classes off due to an injury its taken its time to heal …

Lucky enough have seen quite a few friends popping down to the village, some lovely weekends with my friends Reece and Scott , We celebrated christmas presents in end of May lol, so they have been down twice and we have been up to see them twice with travels to Edinburgh … so glad covid was lifted …. they created a beautiful album of memories as a gift.

Had some fun with Sir Michael and Lady Emma and nice food…oh the joy of the first meal out after lockdown was sheer heaven,

my mother had her 91st Birthday bless her and my father his 93rd … I felt like i had turned into a catering company !!!

The garden has been a joy this year the flowers with all its blooms has been lovely to watch, although its hard work,

Been great having my brother move into the next village he is slowly settling in, totally love his garden, when he is down here been nice that we have caught up with each other ,many a latte in Stockbridge

Had a hysterical day taking my father out to Gun wharf in Portsmouth

We did our first event after 18 months which was the Royal Windsor Horse Show we supplied entertainment for the south lawn which went down very well, the weather good for us so it was a fun few days and we are now working on the the Pageant for the HRH the Queens 75 anniversary the platinum jubilee for 2022

It was great to see her Majesty at the Horse show she was there everyday and enjoying herself .. great photos of her laughing, i nearly got knocked over by her driving …

Sad news Dougie’s closest and our dear friend Una had not been to well during covid, she had moved up to Edinburgh, to be near one of her sons who had fabulously got her a cottage and a carer, we weren’t able to visit last year over covid, and now covid was lifted we arranged our visit to Edinburgh to see her we killed two birds with one stone it started off a visit to LONDON ( oh the joy of London) to see a costume exhibition the dinner with Biggins that had been far too long not seeing him lovely tonic he is the best at making you laugh ..next morning drove from London to Mansfield to see Dougie’s sister Pearl for lunch then drove on to Edinburgh long drive but beautiful driving around Berwick into Edinburgh, I think it was about 9 hours that day of driving! we went to visit Una the next morning, a lovely house and garden so lovely to see her, she looked as beautiful as ever , i will post a tribute to Una later … it was very emotional and filled with love with all her strength she got up to wave us good bye a moment i will never ever forget… the bond between Dougie and Una was very special… sadly a few weeks later she passed ….. god bless her … the out cry of love for her was beautiful ….

Our trip back via Manchester helped and cheered our spirits up seeing our friends only to have to do the whole journey again a few weeks later for Una’s funeral which was sad but lovely and oh so Una, stylish, full of love and oh so chic …Happy Memories… I was so touched they read my letter to uni at the service . it was lovely to reflect her friendship with dougie on our journey and the weather was beautiful the drive on the A407 was stunning…

In the in-between weeks went to London to see “Anything goes “ Another trip to London ! lunch with fabulous Su Pollard at Zedel which was great fun.. fantastic that I have got Dougie in a chair was able to zoom him around the West End next day lunch at the original Ivy still the best ! with Barbara Ferris and Jean Muir Barbara is one of the kindest persons I have ever known .. Dougie’s closet friends are so special

Barbara Una and Dougie go way back from Cool for cats back in the 50’s amazing ..

We went to visit another Dougie’s close friends Linda and Ray Cooney at their beautiful house in Epping for a lovely lunch with Annie Rogers , Linda is another really kind lady she does so much for everyone she gave us a painting which will enjoy looking at with affection to Linda and Ray

On our second visit to Edinburgh stopped off on the way to see my friend Reece in Blackpool, not been there in over a year , so proud of him and his company and what he has achieved Winnie tree properties and stays in Blackpool more of that to follow later no doubt . and on our return stayed with them in Manchester .I love the Atmosphere in Manchester , and we went for a an amazing meal at the Blackfriars … Dougie said it was the best meal he had had in ages … ( so that made me feel good ! not) joking

So its been quite a summer lovely seeing friends LIsa and Pat, Judy, Geoff and Richard , Nancy Chris Isobell and Clara ,The Campbells ,Izzy, Simon and Ash and congratulations as they have got engaged!

My dear sister is still being full time looking after her husband Terry she has done remarkable well bless her I dont know how she does it … My mother is always pleased to see us and enjoyed our trips out for lunch no wonder i need to go on a diet ….

My Father has now gone into care , Paul and I visited him this week , very emotional for me but he is in the best place possible for him .. our meeting was humble and touching bless him…

so now got to get get on with things …. Generation class back live this Sunday! and getting together press launch for the jubilee and Dougie has written a play that they are doing a reading of it at the Cooneys next month And then before long it will christmas shows to prepare ! and for me to catch up and blog shorter ones and more often ! and sort out 1000’s of photos !
